Prof. Kaushik Bhattacharya, Caltech VP, IITM alum, develops theory-driven new materials.
Professor Kaushik Bhattacharya is the Howell N. Tyson, Sr., Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science and Vice-Provost at the California Institute of Technology. He earned his B.Tech from IIT Madras (1986), Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota (1991), and completed postdoctoral training at the Courant Institute (1991–1993). Joining Caltech in 1993, his research focuses on the mechanical behavior of materials and theory-guided development of new materials. Recipient of the von Kármán Medal, Warner T. Koiter Medal, and multiple distinguished alumni awards, he also served as Editor of the Journal of Mechanics and Physics of Solids (2004–2015).
